Baby Formula

For new mothers and women who have had children, the decision to breast feed or feed infants with baby formulas has become increasingly important with the findings of a study in Canada regarding amounts of MSG and processed free aspartic acid. Both of these chemicals are neurotoxins. They are found in all baby formula brands.

The long-term effects of glutamic acid (MSG) and processed free aspartic acid are the unknown. The fact that neurotoxins are present in all baby formula brands is a noteworthy concern because the blood brain barrier is never fully developed in infants. The lack of a blood barrier allows neurotoxins more accessibility to the brain. The bottom line is that we do not know the long term effects of glumatic acids and aspartic acid on the development the infant’s brain.

As the time of writing it is believed, there are no known studies of baby formula brands and their content of processed glumatic acid and processed free aspartic acid in the United States. Because of the small number of baby formula brands tested, the Canadian study is a limited study. The baby formula brands used in the Canadian study are Carnation Good Start, Enfalac Iron Fortified, Enfalac Nutramigen Hypoallergenic, Isomil Soy Formula, and Similac Lactose Free. In the United States the baby formula brands marketed in Canada as Enfalac are sold under the product name Enfamil.

The Canadian study is available at www.westonaprice.org/children/msgformula.html. I leave it to the readers to investigate and review this study on baby formula brands. It should be noted that in the United States, the FDA reviews all baby formula brands before they are marketed. The FDA at this time considers baby formulas safe for use.

Another important finding of the study regards the significant amounts of processed glumatic acid and processed free aspartic acid found in hypoallergenic baby formula the Canadian study. No conclusions can be made from the findings in the Canadian study concerning the use of hypoallergenic formulas. However, manufactures of baby formula brands are moving away from producing hypoallergenic formulas.

The decision to use baby formulas is a serious choice for mothers to consider. There are differences in the levels of processed glumatic acid and processed free aspartic acid in baby formula brands. When it comes to selecting baby formula brand, knowledge is the best key to finding the right answer. An educated consumer makes the best consumer.
